Yesterday we finally arrived into Rwanda. I don’t really get internet here… right now I am sitting in an internet cafe in Gitarama, but I am updating in microsoft word and will copy and paste what I write when I get the chance.
We just got back from visiting the boys at Umuryango. They are so much fun! Children here are so friendly, I’ve been getting some fun video footage. I am thinking of just doing mini documentaries of the 20 children that live at Umuryango. Not sure how all of my footage will piece together, but I sure am getting a lot. We also get called “muzungo” a lot which means “white person”… we attract a lot of attention, but it is fun and I feel like a celebrity. I joke! But really, we do attract tons of attention because Rwandans in this section do not see a lot of muzungo’s. Last night was the first time I’ve ever slept under a mosquito net… I finally got my princess bed that I’ve always wanted as a kid… hahaha! Anyway I will paste the update I wrote in Word below.
July 25, 2008 –Rwanda
So, after two days of traveling, we finally made it to Rwanda on July 25. Rwanda is a beautiful place filled with mountains and gorgeous scenery. I’ve already started to get some video footage, and am really enjoying putting some things together. The house that we are staying at is in a perfect location. It is right in Gitarama with many Rwandans surrounding the area. The children are hilarious and were the first people to greet us when we got off the van. They especially like it when they get their picture taken and you show them the result of the photo. Eventually we went inside the home for the grand tour and had to close the gate behind us. Funny thing is, these kids love watching and talking to us that they put their little faces underneath the gate. I took some photos of them and talked with them for a little bit. A lot of the neighborhood children speak a lot of French, mainly Kinyarwanda but most of them do not speak English…but they want to learn from us, which is fun.
Tomorrow we go into training then we get to see the boys at Umuryango. I am really excited for this, because after my experience with the neighborhood children (playing football, Frisbee, etc.)…I have come to the conclusion that I am really warming up to these children so easily. They are so easy to get along with, and I am just enjoying their beautifulness. It is a wonderful feeling being here, and I am glad we finally arrived. I am looking forward to more adventures.
Love you and miss you guys already. But there is so much more adventuring to go on.
